Our History

Founded in 1914 as a rag and scrap paper sorting operation in St. Louis, MO, we expanded into the national brokerage business in the 1940′s. By the 1950′s, Federal was helping some of the nation’s largest printers market their recyclables. During those years, we were known as a company where honesty and integrity always came first.

During the 1960′s, Federal became a leader in the foam trading, recycling and manufacturing businesses. Over the next 20 years, we built companies in England, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Uganda, Italy, Canada, and the United States. Today, our sister companies, Federal Foam Technologies and Federal Eco Foam, operate industry-leading foam manufacturing businesses in the U.S. and Europe.

By 1980, Federal’s Recycling division grew to become the premier waste paper marketing company for printers, box shops, grocery distribution and convertors. We also acquired recycling plants and helped others build plants by providing equipment and material marketing.
